The Goonies
Last night, TBS was playing one of the greatest movies ever made: The Goonies.
I had my 19th month old son with me and we had gone back downstairs because he did not want to fall asleep. I saw that it was on, so I sat down on the couch to watch it. Sadly, it was just on TV so they had all their normal stupid edits, but I did not care, and was not in the mood to put in the DVD.
After a few minutes of making sure my son didn't get into anything, while enjoying the scene where Chunk had to do the truffle shuffle, my son decided it was cuddle time, and he crawled up onto my lap and sat down.
That was a true father-son moment. Me, sitting with my son, watching The Goonies.
The Goonies is one of those movies I will never get sick of. I have loved it since the first time I saw it when I was 8. I remember seeing it in a theater called UA Cinema in San Jose, CA. It was a 2 for 1 deal. The Goonies was first, followed by E.T. afterwards. Since this was a re-release for E.T., the theater was packed. I remember talking to a kid sitting in front of me before and in between the movies. I don't remember his name, but he was holding a stuffed animal. I believe it was the kind that roll into a ball with the head sticking out. I can't remember what those are called.
That movie was one of the defining movies of my childhood. It is one that stands out when I think about what I used to enjoy back then. I hold it up there with movies like Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Last Starfighter, Labyrinth, Explorers, The Secret of Nihm, and E.T.
I hope my son loves it as much as I do.
